6 Ways to Prepare Your AC for Summer (Before It's 95 Degrees)
Every year we get a flood of emergency calls on the first really hot day of summer. Most of those breakdowns could have been prevented with 30 minutes of spring maintenance. Here's what you can do right now to avoid being stuck in a 90-degree house.
1. Change your air filter
This is the simplest and most impactful thing you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, and can freeze your evaporator coil. Change it every 1-3 months, or monthly if you have pets.
2. Clear debris from your outdoor unit
Your condenser needs good airflow to work properly. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, and any vegetation within 2 feet of the unit. Gently hose off the fins to remove dust and pollen buildup.
3. Test it before you need it
Turn your AC on now, while it's still cool out. Set it 5 degrees below room temperature and let it run for 15 minutes. Check that cold air is coming from the vents and the outdoor unit is running. Better to discover a problem now than on a 100-degree Saturday.
