5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater
Your water heater works hard every day — showers, dishes, laundry. Most homeowners don't think about it until something goes wrong. Here are five warning signs that your water heater is telling you it's time for a replacement.
1. It's over 10 years old
Tank water heaters typically last 8-12 years. Check the serial number on yours — the first two digits are usually the year it was manufactured. If it's approaching or past 10, start planning for a replacement before it fails unexpectedly.
2. Rusty or discolored water
If rusty water only comes from the hot side, your tank is likely corroding from the inside. This can't be repaired. Once corrosion starts, a leak isn't far behind.
3. Strange noises
Popping, cracking, or rumbling sounds mean sediment has hardened at the bottom of the tank. This makes the heater work harder, increases your energy bill, and accelerates wear. Flushing the tank annually can prevent this, but once the noise starts, the damage is often done.
4. Water pooling around the base
Any moisture around your water heater is a red flag. Small leaks become big leaks fast. If you see water, call a plumber the same day — a 50-gallon tank failure can cause serious water damage.
5. You're running out of hot water faster
If your morning showers are getting shorter because the hot water runs out, sediment buildup is reducing your tank's effective capacity. At this point, you're paying to heat water you can't even use.
